The luxurious 22-person holiday home Varnhof is situated in the small Belgian village of Teuven, just across the Dutch border. This former farm is surrounded by fruit trees, meadows and woodland. The Varnhof doesn’t just have a wonderful location and stylish design, but it is also wheelchair-friendly! So it’s easy to see why this holiday home has been classified as a 4-star accommodation by the Flemish government.
Then and now
The property was built in 1920 and for a long time served as a farm. In 1940 it was bought by the Meyers family, who set up a dairy farm here. The farm also became a home for chickens, pigs and hundreds of standard fruit trees. Over time, the livestock – and therefore also the farm – got bigger and bigger. And the standard fruit trees were gradually replaced by dwarf fruit trees. In 1980, a nearby farm was seriously damaged by a fire. Out of sympathy for the farmer, the Meyers family offered him a temporary stable on the Varnhof. When the farmer left, the stables were used to store fruit for a while. But then the plans changed again: The family wanted to transform the farm into an attractive, top-quality holiday home that is accessible to everyone. We certainly think they achieved their goal!
Let’s take a look inside
You enter the holiday home into a hall that leads to the large, open living area. You get a lot of natural light here as the back of the house is made almost entirely of glass. In the spacious, attractive sitting area with leather sofas, everyone can fit comfortably around the wood-burning stove. There is also a large, open kitchen equipped with all conveniences including a 6-burner ceramic hob, large oven, coffee machine, kettle and dishwasher. You have everything you need to prepare a delicious meal. And the long, wooden dining tables are perfect for meals together. On the ground floor you will also find a wheelchair-accessible double bedroom and an ensuite bathroom with walk-in shower, washbasin and toilet.
On the first floor, which can be reached both via the staircase and a lift, there are six luxurious bedrooms with lots of natural light. Two of these bedrooms are wheelchair accessible and have their own bathroom. The four other bedrooms share two bathrooms equipped with a spacious walk-in shower, washbasin and toilet. On the second floor, which can be reached via the staircase, there is one bathroom with shower and washbasin, one double bedroom and one six-person bedroom (which is only accessible via the double room). All bedrooms are equipped with luxury single box-spring beds.
Outdoor space
To the east of the house is a lovely, large terrace (which can be reached both through the door in the stairwell and through the sliding doors in the living room). This large terrace is nicely sheltered from the road and gets the sun most of the day. In addition, it also offers beautiful views of the orchard, and the meadows and woodland beyond. If you come in the right season, you can also taste the delicious pears and apples that grow on the fruit trees. Like Conference, Jonagold and Elstar. Children will also love the little playing field with trampoline.
