At the edge of the South Limburg village Mechelen lies the 6-person holiday home called De Oude Brandweerkazerne (The Former Fire Station). As the name already reveals, this holiday home is part of the former fire station of Mechelen. The monumental, authentic exterior of the building forms a beautiful contrast with the modern, luxurious interior of the building.
Then and now
De Oude Brandweerkazerne is part of a unique farmstead that was built in 1250 and used to be called "de Heerenhof". This farmstead with four wings and a large courtyard once housed the commandery, an order of knights and a section owned by the Johanniter Order. Over the centuries, parts of the farmstead were destroyed by fire, but these parts were also rebuilt. The current main building (dating from 1825) served in the 20th century as the administrative centre of the municipality of Wittem. The building that currently accommodates holiday home De Oude Brandweerkazerne was used as a hay barn for a long time, and eventually as a fire station.
In 2008, a family from the north of Holland, Arno and Marloes and their children, were looking for a suitable family home in South Limburg. They had always loved the Heuvelland region and longed to live there. When they happened to be driving through Mechelen one day, they discovered that the old fire station was going to be transformed into five attractive homes. Despite the fact that there were many interested buyers, Arno and Marloes managed to secure one of these pearls. After having lived in this house with great pleasure for seven years, they are now offering it as a holiday home.
Let's take a look inside
After entering the house, you will find yourself in a spacious hallway with staircase and access to the living room and kitchen. Once inside the living room, you will be surprised by the great amount of light and the feeling of space thanks to the high ceilings. Situated at the front of the room you will find the dining area, which has a large, wooden dining table. Open the garden doors for a nice breeze in summer. At the back of the room you will find the cosy sitting area, where you can lounge on one of the luxurious sofas around the decorative fireplace (not suitable for use) and flatscreen television.
The kitchen is equipped with all conveniences including a 5-burner gas hob, large oven, microwave, large refrigerator, freezer, coffee machine, Senseo machine, Nespresso machine, kettle and dishwasher. While the cooking enthusiasts of the group prepare a Burgundian meal, the rest can socialize and have a drink at the dining table in the kitchen. In the meantime, the little ones can play with the kitchen play set. They even have their own little dining table in the living room.
On the first floor you will find three spacious double bedrooms, which are all equipped with two single boxspring beds. Furthermore, there is a spacious bathroom with a bath, large walk-in rain shower and double washbasin. On the landing you will find an extra separate toilet.
Outdoor space
When staying in this holiday home, you have access to a private terrace from where you have a magnificent view over the hilly landscape of Limburg. This terrace faces south and is therefore ideal for sunbathing. Just take a seat and relax in one of the sun loungers. Thanks to the large outdoor table, it is also possible to dine outside. Furthermore, we highly recommend you to explore the beautiful surroundings. Holiday home De Oude Brandweerkazerne is situated just a few steps away from the meadows and woods. And despite the fact that you are surrounded by nature, you are within walking distance of nice restaurants, cafes, farm shops, a bakery, butcher, ATM and supermarket.
