This cosy four-person holiday home, Dal Bissen, is located in the picturesque village of the same name, which also has a protected town and village landmark. The village has only one street, on which the hamlets of ‘Dal’ (six houses) and ‘Bissen’ (twelve houses) are situated. The paved road stops at the holiday home and then opens up into a magnificent walking area. Legend has it that the name of the village is derived from the Limburg word ‘bissem’ (‘bezem’ in Dutch), meaning broom; here, people used to make brooms using branches from the nearby forest. Today, the village is better known for being one of the most beautiful villages in Zuid-Limburg and officially forms part of the larger village of Mechelen, just 1.2km away. This entire area has been designated a sanctuary, making this property the ideal spot for guests who love peace and quiet and appreciate nature. Here you can enjoy long walks and then return ‘home’ at the end of the day to a cosy cottage.
Then and now
This holiday home was originally used as a pigeon loft. It was not until 1994 that the owners decided to convert it into a residential home. The renovators did an excellent job, transforming the former pigeon loft into a beautiful half-timbered property. Karin became the proud owner of this little gem in 2018. The house was completely renovated in 2023; a new bathroom and kitchen was installed, all the clay work was restored, and the bedrooms now have their own entrance door (previously one open bedroom) and new flooring.
Inside
When you enter the property, you enter the hall with a staircase and separate toilet. The hall leads onto the dining room. The large dining table is perfect for dining or playing board games with friends or family. The games are kept in a cupboard in the kitchen, where you will also find a selection of cookbooks and magazines. There is also a folder with information about the surrounding area. So you will find plenty of things to do during your stay! Off the dining room is the snug living room with a TV, a lovely sofa, and an armchair. There is also a lovely seating area in front of the large glass window. Kick back and relax with a good book and a cup of steaming tea and time will fly by. Adjoining the dining room is a charming kitchen equipped with all the modern comforts, including an induction hob, convection oven, Nespresso machine, kettle, and dishwasher. In the summer, the garden doors can be opened for a refreshing breeze and access to the terrace.
All the bedrooms are upstairs. On the first floor you will find a spacious double bedroom (two single divan beds) with a washbasin and an additional cot. This bedroom is accessed through the anteroom, which has a charming study area and a large sofa. This room also has beautiful views over the surrounding hilly countryside. On the second floor you will find the second bedroom, which has a double bed (Auping) with two single mattresses. This room is situated in the attic of the cottage. The bathroom is also on this floor and has a bath, shower, washbasin, and toilet.
Outside
Guests at Dal Bissen have access to a sheltered back garden with a terrace. This garden may not be too large, but you will certainly not lack any space! Indeed, you are in the middle of a large hiking area. Put on your walking shoes and discover the natural surroundings. For golf lovers, there is a beautiful golf course at the end of the footpath.
