Come and stay with a group of up to 10 guests in the restored, half-timbered farmhouse ‘Op de Elzet’. This unique holiday home is located in Limburg’s hilly countryside in the hamlet of Elzet. This hamlet is part of Mechelen, a cosy village with several lovely restaurants and cafés.
Then and now
This historic half-timbered farm from the eighteenth century has for generations been owned by the Ploemen family, who once ran a farm here. In 2010, the farm was lovingly taken over by Karin and Jan-Jaap, who have expertly restored and renovated the property. A fine piece of craftsmanship. For example, the rear façade of the property was re-made from glass and half-timbering, so that the previously dark house is now bathed in natural light. Despite the extensive renovation, you will still be able to spot lots of authentic elements. For example, the original stable ceiling, antique stove and wooden half-timbered constructions.
Let’s take a look inside
The holiday home is spacious and has many different areas that are connected to each other. To the left of the entrance hall you’ll find a TV room, and to the right a kitchen. From both rooms you can easily walk through into the attractive sitting area where you can lounge on one of the lovely sofas by the wood-burning stove, overlooking the rolling hills of the surrounding area. The authentic monastery window gives this room a special touch. In the farmhouse kitchen, you will no doubt immediately spot the antique stove with floral design. This stove is only for show as there is also a large Boretti stove. The kitchen is also equipped with all conveniences including a dishwasher, convection oven, microwave, fridge-freezer, coffee machine and kettle. While the cooking enthusiasts of the group prepare a delicious meal, the rest can drink a glass of wine or play a board game at the round farmhouse table in the middle of the kitchen. Dinner can be served at the large dining table in the former shed (behind the half-timbered wall that’s been opened up). When the weather is nice you can also eat outside. The kitchen has direct access to the terrace at the back of the house.
The staircase in the hall leads you to the first and second floor. On the first floor there is a luxurious bathroom and three double bedrooms. The first two bedrooms have a double bed and a private bathroom with walk-in shower, washbasin and toilet. The third bedroom has a bunk bed, making it especially suitable for children. The piece de resistance of the first floor is surely the luxurious bathroom with marble washbasin, bathtub, walk-in shower and spacious sauna. There is also a separate toilet. On the second floor you will find a cosy double bedroom on each side of the mezzanine. The room on the left is equipped with a double bed and the room on the right has two single beds.
Outdoor space
Although wonderful inside, the home’s exterior is what gives it a quintessentially ‘Limburg’ character. The large, private garden offers a beautiful view of the hilly meadows with Limburg’s famous orchards on the one side and grazing cows on the other This very peaceful location, where traffic is limited to the odd tractor, is the ideal place to unwind and enjoy nature and each other’s company.
