Castle Grasbroek is a 14-person holiday home with a special history, many authentic elements and modern luxury. Let’s be honest: does spending the night in a castle not sound like a fairy tale to you?
Then and Now
The history of Castle Grasbroek is very closely linked to Castle Born, located further down the road. In the 16th century Born Castle was owned by the Drimborn family. Alexander of Drimborn wanted to succeed his father as ruler of the castle, but his brother Johan stood in the way. When Alexander failed to get Castle Born in his possession, he decided to build a castle himself: Castle Grasbroek. In 1581 he started the construction. After no less than sixteen years of construction, the magnificent castle was finished.
On either side of the entrance, you can admire the original coats of arms of Alexander II of Drimborn and his wife Elisabeth of Olmissen. Fortunately, many more original elements have been preserved. This is partly thanks to nature conservationist Natuurmonumenten, who took over the castle in 1985. Alexander's castle is better off than his brother's, which was completely destroyed by a fire in 1930.
Let’s take a look inside
Follow the driveway to reach the castle. When you walk up the stone steps, you can enter the building. You’ll enter the hall, which provides access to the living room which also serves as a dining room. As soon as you enter, you can see an inviting ambiance and a feeling of spaciousness. This feeling of spaciousness is the result of the original high ceilings. The large windows and the many old embrasures in the walls also provide plenty of light.
The living room is a tastefully decorated space with a large corner sofa and an authentic fireplace as centerpiece. In the adjoining dining room, you can admire many old elements such as hidden shutters, niches and loopholes. The dining table is big enough for dining with up to fourteen people.
The kitchen, which consists of two adjacent rooms, is equipped with all conveniences such as a dishwasher, 6-burner gas stove, large oven, microwave, high fridge, freezer, coffee maker and kettle. While the cooking enthusiasts of the group prepare a lovely meal, the others can socialize and have a drink or play a game at the kitchen table.
Through the 400-year-old, impressive spiral staircase made of a tree trunk you reach the first floor. Here you will find a spacious landing with two double bedrooms, two four-person bedrooms and two bathrooms (with shower, washbasin, and toilet). On the second floor there is another large double bedroom with a washbasin. All bedrooms are equipped with luxury single box-spring beds.
Outdoor area
Guests at Kasteel Grasbroek can use the lovely terrace at the front of the house and the private garden at the side of the house. Furthermore, the estate of the castle includes a large meadow, remains of the old moat, and several annexes. The former owners of the castle, the Barbou de Roosteren family, live in one of these annexes.
Please note
Due to the location, Castle Grasbroek is not suitable for youth groups and noisy groups.
