‘De Brouwketel’ is a charming, 6-person holiday home situated in the heart of South Limburg, within walking distance of several great restaurants and shops in Gulpen. This holiday home is part of an ancient farmstead called ‘De Veldhof’. The farmstead is named after the watermill that was used between 1825 and 1922 to pump water to the Gulpener Bierbrouwerij brewery. The owners of ‘De Veldhof’, Miriam and Michel, are ready to welcome you with open arms at this location and make sure you have an unforgettable holiday.
History of De Veldhof
De Veldhof is Michel’s childhood home. He was born and raised here, as were his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather before him. The square outline of the farmstead around a courtyard is a hint that the foundations date back to the 17th century. At that time, residential houses, stables, and barns were built around a central courtyard that could be sealed off with gates, so that the inhabitants felt protected. This protection proved to be much needed at ‘De Veldhof’: in the 18th century, violent robberies were committed by the ‘Buckriders’ – demons who rode through the sky on the back of flying goats. And that wasn’t all: around 1850, the farmstead was completely destroyed by a fire. ‘De Veldhof’ was rebuilt and, until 1971, was a working farm with cows and horses. As Gulpen expanded, the land owned by the farm shrank and the farmstead was repurposed. Now, De Veldhof has been a familiar holiday destination for more than 40 years for active types who appreciate the laid-back lifestyle, the great outdoors, nature and Limburg’s crafts, traditions and regional produce.
Inside
The entrance to the 6-person holiday home ‘De Brouwketel’ is at the front of the farm on the car park. With Michel being a professional brewmaster, the houses have been aptly named after types of beer.
The wooden gate leads to a small square where the front door is located. The large, open hall has a staircase that leads to the first floor, which has a separate toilet. On the ground floor is the cosy living room, which has a three-seater sofa, three armchairs, and flat-screen TV. It’s a lovely place to have a drink with friends and family, read a good book, or watch an exciting film. The sitting area offers a panoramic view over the town of Gulpen. The eye-catcher in this house has to be the beautiful kitchen! The spacious, ultra-modern, open-plan kitchen has everything you need to prepare a gorgeous meal with delicious local products. The kitchen island with cabinets on one side has a 5-ring induction hob, Quooker kitchen tap, steam oven and combi-oven, and dishwasher. In addition to all the kitchen utensils you need, there are two fridge-freezers and a Senseo coffee machine. This makes ‘De Brouwketel’ an ideal holiday home for cooking clubs and anyone who is passionate about cooking. Enjoy your home-cooked meal at the modern dining table with your friends and family.
The bedrooms – all double rooms with single box-spring beds – are located on the second floor. This floor also has two bathrooms and a separate toilet. One bathroom has a bathtub and double washbasin, and the second bathroom has a shower and washbasin. The bathrooms are accessible via the landing.
Because of the open staircases and the location of the house, ‘De Brouwketel’ is not suitable for small children. Pets are also not allowed.
Outside
The house has a sheltered, private terrace at the front – perfect for al fresco dining or enjoying a beer in the sun. The farmhouse is centrally located along the main road from Aachen to Maastricht, so you’ll notice the traffic driving past if you’re sitting outside. You can also choose to use the shared sun terrace at the back of the farmhouse (about 20 metres away from the building). This is the perfect place to sit and relax – please feel free to fill up the picnic basket provided!
As ‘De Veldhof’ is centrally located on the main road between Maastricht and Aachen, in the undulating hills of South Limburg, we definitely recommend exploring the beautiful surroundings. Go out for a nice walk or bike ride, or spend a day in the city in Maastricht or Aachen.
