In the centre of Gulpen (South Limburg), close to several nice restaurants and shops, you will find the attractive holiday home called Gerardus. This holiday home is part of the age-old farmstead “De Veldhof", which is named after the water mill that was used between 1825 and 1922 to supply water to the beer brewery in Gulpen. The owners of De Veldhof, Miriam and Michel, will do everything they can to make your holiday unforgettable.
The history of farmstead De Veldhof
‘De Veldhof’ is Michel’s childhood home. He was born and raised here, as were his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather before him. The square outline of the farmstead around a courtyard is a hint that the foundations date back to the 17th century. At that time, residential houses, stables, and barns were built around a central courtyard that could be sealed off with gates, so that the inhabitants felt protected. This protection proved to be much needed at ‘De Veldhof’: in the 18th century, violent robberies were committed by the ‘Buckriders’ – demons who rode through the sky on the back of flying goats. And that wasn’t all: around 1850, the farmstead was completely destroyed by a fire. ‘De Veldhof’ was rebuilt and, until 1971, was a working farm with cows and horses. As Gulpen expanded, the land owned by the farm shrank and the farmstead was repurposed. Now, De Veldhof has been a familiar holiday destination for more than 40 years for active types who appreciate the laid-back lifestyle, the great outdoors, nature and Limburg’s crafts, traditions and regional produce.
Let's take a look inside
‘Gerardus’ is a 5-person holiday home that you enter via the shared courtyard. The first room you enter is the sitting area, which has a comfortable three-seater sofa, two low rocking chairs, and a flat-screen TV. All you have to do is sit back and relax with a good book or film. The living room leads to the dining area with a quaint dining table that is perfect for having breakfast together or enjoying a delicious meal prepared in the kitchen. The open kitchen includes a dishwasher, 4-ring induction hob, fridge with freezer, coffee machine, Senseo machine, and kettle. On the ground floor is the bathroom with shower, toilet, and washbasin. The open staircase in the living area leads to the first floor, where the bedrooms are located (one double bedroom and one triple bedroom). The luxury box-spring beds will already be made for you upon arrival – after a day of walking or cycling through South Limburg’s beautiful hills, you’ll be looking forward to a good night’s sleep.
Outdoor space
All Veldhof holiday homes have their own little terrace in the courtyard, meaning you always have the opportunity to eat outside or enjoy a beer in the sun. Beer is also the central theme for the names of the holiday homes, as Michel is a brewer by profession. At the back of the farmstead, there is a communal playing area for children with playground equipment, with a swing and sandpit. Furthermore, we recommend you to discover the amazing surroundings! De Veldhof is situated on a very central location in the Heuvelland region, namely on the main road between Maastricht and Aachen. Enjoy a nice walk or bike ride, or visit the cities of Maastricht and Aachen.
