The 6-person holiday home Vakwerkhoes is tucked away at the end of a private road in the South Limburg hamlet of Kuttingen, in an idyllic spot near the river Geul and the Heimansgroeve nature reserve. This is the perfect location for enjoying the phenomenal views and wonderful tranquillity. The holiday home has been lovingly renovated by Fred and Lean Brauers, the proud owners. Almost everything you come across in the house, they have made themselves: from the kitchen to the stained-glass windows to the bedheads.
Then and now
‘'t Vakwerkhoes’ is a former farmhouse that is almost two centuries old. The entire building used to be half-timbered, but a fire in 1930 destroyed the façade and it had to be rebuilt in stone. Fortunately, the tiled side wall was spared. The family who lived there at the time kept a record of how many trout the father caught each time he went fishing – look at roof tiles and see if you can spot the numbers. From 1950, the house was bought by a new family, who ran a cow and pig farm. In 1990, this family converted part of the cowsheds to create a home for their son Fred and his wife Lean. The farm is no longer in operation today. Fred has transformed his parents’ former home into luxury holiday accommodation, preserving and restoring the original features as much as possible. In addition, he has worked a lot with new, ecological materials such as clay plaster and flax insulation, creating an attractive mix of old and new.
Let’s take a look inside
The many wooden elements, warm tones and craftsmanship create a cosy atmosphere in the house. You enter into a small hall that leads to the open living area. In the living area you will find an attractive sitting area with a large corner sofa and pellet stove, an Austrian-style dining area and an open kitchen with kitchen island. The kitchen is equipped with all conveniences to cook up a feast. On the ground floor there is also a separate toilet, a double bedroom and an ensuite bathroom with washbasin and walk-in shower. From bed you can enjoy the views over the meadows and the terrace. The authentic wooden staircase in the hall leads up to the first floor. On the landing you can see the downstairs through the glass floor window (made of safety glass). Next to the landing are two double bedrooms, both with single box-spring beds. One of these bedrooms also has a cosy attic space, which can serve as a play or relaxation room, for example. Finally, on the first floor you will find a high-quality bathroom with a luxurious walk-in shower, washbasin and separate toilet. Tralala
Outdoor space
It may be lovely and cosy indoors but make sure to also spend some time outdoors as the house has four patios! The back door provides access to a covered terrace with sheltered, outdoor kitchen and sitting area located at the rear. There is also a small terrace at the front of the holiday home, which catches the sun for much of the day. We recommend exploring the beautiful Heuvelland region by foot or by bike! ‘’T Vakwerkhoes’ is an ideal base to explore the area. Bicycles can be stored safely in the lockable garage.
