The 2-person holiday home Josephine is situated on the edge of Maastricht, on an estate called Landgoed de Heerdeberg. In this special place, you are surrounded by fruit trees, chickens and wooded slopes. This setting allows you to forget the everyday hustle and bustle so that you can start enjoying the little things in life.
History of the Heerdeberg estate
The Heerdeberg estate is located in the “Mergelland” region in South Limburg that has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The estate's buildings were built in 1911, using marl that was extracted from the nearby caves. At the time, the estate was owned by a Catholic congregation. This Catholic congregation founded a boarding school for boys who were considered difficult to educate. On the premises there was also a farm, a butcher's shop, a fruit orchard and a bakery that all provided food for the boys and the priests. In 1990, the boarding school was closed, and all the buildings lay empty for a while. In 2012, the dilapidated complex was bought by José and Richard, who embarked on a huge restoration project. José, who had instantly fallen in love with this magical place, wanted to create a social meeting place for her family, but also for others.
The Heerdeberg estate - Today
José's vision has been realised. The old farm complex has been transformed into an inspiring sanctuary where the entire family can happily live together and where they can also receive guests. Daughter Lotte and her husband form a great duo of architects who have converted the former marl stables into two stylish holiday homes. These holiday homes are named after Richard's grandparents, Theodorus and Josephine. Son Coen has transformed the former cowsheds into a charming inn, aptly named "Bij de Paters" (Place of the priests). In the former butcher's shop, Coen has created a fully self-sufficient farm shop. De eieren zijn bijvoorbeeld gelegd door de mergellandhoenderen die op het terrein rondscharrelen en het vlees is afkomstig van de varkens die in de mergelgrotten opgroeien. Furthermore, the estate has several attractive terraces decorated with African art.
