Huisje Merum – Then and now
For many years, Huisje Merum was the happy and much-loved home of Mr and Mrs Jansen. They had worked all their lives on an inland barge and, after retiring, returned to their favourite place: Merum. Mr Jansen tended to his vegetable garden, was devoted to caring for his horses, and made his own replicas of ships and yachts. Mrs Jansen loved paint pictures of the beautiful surroundings. Together, they enjoyed their little farm and the Limburg countryside for many years. Their love for this place was so great that they wanted to leave property to the Stichting Limburgs Landschap (Limburg Landscape Foundation).
Together with the couple, the Stichting Limburgs Landschap decided to convert the farmhouse into a holiday home so that many more people would have the opportunity to experience this gem! In 2011, the farmhouse (which consisted of a private home and adjoining stable) was transformed into a luxurious, 16-person holiday home with eight bedrooms and six bathrooms. The stable was converted into a spacious living area.
Let's take a peek inside
Huisje Merum may look like a cute little house from the outside, but once inside you will be surprised by a large, open space. You enter the house in the former kitchen which still has the original floor tiles and built-in cupboards. Currently, this room serves as a pantry.
To the left of the pantry you will find the new kitchen and the adjoining living space. The red Limburg floor tiles, the many wooden features, the old stable gates and the fireplace give this space a warm atmosphere. On the raised part of the space there is an additional sitting area, where you can take a moment for yourself and read a good book or watch TV. The centre of the living space is the large, wooden dining table that can seat up to sixteen people. Dinner can be prepared in the well-equipped, open-plan kitchen, which includes a dishwasher, kitchen island, 6-burner cooker, large oven, microwave, two fridges, a freezer, coffee machine, Senseo machine, electric kettle and plenty of crockery.
Huisje Merum has eight double bedrooms in total. One of the bedrooms is on the ground floor and has an en-suite with walk-in shower, sink, and toilet. The other seven cosy bedrooms, three of which have an en-suite, are on the upper floor. Guests sleeping in the other four bedrooms can use the two bathrooms on the landing. There is also a separate toilet on the ground floor and on the upper floor.
Outdoor space
As a guest of Huisje Merum, you have access to a large private garden with a terrace, lawn, and table tennis table. Enjoy the outdoors and the beautiful view over the meadows.
