Between Hills and Memories
Valkenburg is different from other places in the Netherlands. Not flat, but rolling. No standard buildings, but ruins, marl caves, and old city walls. Here, you walk past traces from Roman times, climb up to the old castle ruins, or literally disappear underground into mysterious tunnels full of stories. Staying overnight in Valkenburg is not just practical – it’s part of the adventure.
As the days grow shorter…
From mid-November, Valkenburg slowly transforms into a Christmas village straight out of a storybook. Lights in the trees, fire pits along the streets, music playing outside, and of course the famous Christmas markets in the caves. It’s warm, even when it’s freezing outside. People wander through the marl tunnels with a mulled wine in hand and scarves wrapped tight.
The surroundings join in
If you stay for a night, you quickly realize there’s no chance to get bored here. Nature is close and impressive. Walk along the Geul River, roam through the Gerendal valley, or hop on a bike and pedal up a few hills. The views are worth every effort. Prefer to take it easy? The area is full of villages where you might find yourself lingering for an afternoon in a cozy café.
Eating, drinking, and just feeling good
Valkenburg is all about the good life. Whether you plop down on a terrace for a slice of vlaai, enjoy a full meal, or look for something surprising – there are plenty of places where you feel right at home. No rush, just great food and a chance to unwind. Exactly what you want after a day of exploring.
