Holiday homes Nieuw Ehrenstein

On the western slope of the Anstel Valley near Kerkrade lies the imposing farmstead Nieuw Ehrenstein. From all sides, the mansion and surrounding farmhouse can be seen in square form. Thanks to a radical restoration by the Limburgs Landschap Foundation lasting many years, the complex has been saved.
Unlike a first sight of the iconic villa would suggest, Nieuw Ehrenstein was originally a farmhouse. It was built in 1753 as a tenant farm of Erenstein Castle. The wall anchors with the year of construction can still be seen on the southern facade of the barn. Hendrik Poyck, owner of the surrounding land, commissioned it in the 18th century. He named the farm after the nearby castle. In 1808, the widow Corneli bought the complex. Her son undertook major renovations because he wanted to live there after his marriage in 1839. He demolishes the original farm house and in its place comes the impressive mansion. The villa was built in an architectural style widely used in South Limburg in the first half of the nineteenth century. This family remained owners of Nieuw Ehrenstein until 1921. The Waelen family then buys Nieuw Ehrenstein including 65 acres of land for their farm. The villa is converted into living quarters for two farming families. The third family converts part of the stable into a residential house. Due to mine subsidence, much damage occurs. After the sale in 1967, the farm remains partly in use but decay sets in. From 2004 the buildings were empty and completely dilapidated. Until Het Limburgs Landschap purchased the complex in 2015 and started the major restoration.
