Discover the magic of the Aachen Christmas Market

A warm mug of glühwein in your hands, the scent of cinnamon in the air, and twinkling lights all around – welcome to the Aachen Christmas Market! For years, this market has been known as one of the most beautiful in Europe. And we get it: nestled between the cathedral and the town hall, it feels like walking through a real-life Christmas movie. Perfect for a romantic weekend, a family outing, or simply because – like us – you’ll take any excuse to dive into Christmas spirit as early as November.

Historic charm with a touch of winter wonder

The setting alone makes this market truly special. The cathedral towers above the stalls, while the town hall is bathed in magical festive lighting. It feels as if the buildings themselves have dressed up for the holidays. Whether you’re a devoted Christmas lover or just mildly festive – this place works its magic on everyone.

Gifts with a story

Shopping at a Christmas market is nothing like shopping in a department store. Here, you won’t find mass-produced items, but hand-carved wooden angels or wool hats knitted from the finest yarns. Perfect for meaningful Christmas gifts – and let’s be honest, a handmade present says far more than something picked up last-minute at the supermarket.

Food & drink: come hungry

Glühwein, bratwurst & Printen

The Aachen Christmas Market is not the place to worry about your diet – absolutely not. It’s all about tasting, enjoying, and then tasting again. Think steaming mugs of hot chocolate (maybe with a cheeky dash of rum) and rich glühwein to warm your hands. And of course: sizzling bratwurst fresh off the grill.

And have you tried the local pride yet? Aachener Printen! These spiced honey cakes are officially listed as cultural heritage – and honestly, they taste ten times better when bought from a wooden stall decorated with baubles.

And that’s not all. Still hungry? Try:

  • Roasted chestnuts, straight from their warm shell
  • Giant savoury pretzels (technically for sharing, but we won’t judge)
  • Mini pancakes (poffertjes) with sugar, Nutella – or whatever you love. Calories can wait till after Christmas.

Music, lights and a spark of Christmas spirit

The Aachen Christmas Market isn’t just about browsing and eating. You’ll hear carols everywhere – sung by choirs or played by street musicians. It becomes especially magical in the evenings: the lights reflect in windows, people soak in the festive sights, and you might hear someone quietly singing along to a classic Christmas tune.

Practical tips

When to go

The market usually opens at the end of November and runs until Christmas Eve. If you prefer to avoid crowds, a weekday evening is perfect. You can stroll peacefully past the stalls without anyone bumping into your glühwein.
